PUERTO RICO CHAPTER

About the Puerto Rico Chapter
Message from past President
Dear members and friends of the Puerto Rico Chapter of the American College of Surgeons:

As I finish my term as president, I wish to take the time to thank all of you for your support during the year and during the convention.

To all of you who were able to attend the convention, I hope that it met your educational expectations and found it useful. As you know, this was the 60th Annual Meeting; the PR Chapter meeting has continued uninterrupted for all of this time and this is no small feat.

Throughout this time, the Chapter convention has served to educate all surgeons in Puerto Rico, and has served as an inspiration of medical students and residents to continue the pursuit of excellence in surgery. It is very important that the chapter continue to work to fulfill the educational needs of the medical profession in Puerto Rico, and continue to lead other societies in setting the highest standards for medical and surgical practice. The meeting has served and will continue to function as an open forum for exchange of ideas between both academic and private surgeons. In these days where so many new products and technologies area available- we- as surgeons with the highest esteem for the concept of social responsibility - can use the expertise of the members of the chapter to sort out what is good for our patients and what is only a passing fad. We must use the Chapter to document what is going on in surgical practice in Puerto Rico, for that is what future generations will see when they look back at what we have achieved.

Looking back at the early years of the chapter, I can only imagine what the founders group had in mind when the chapter was formed. I think that they had in mind a society that served to promote excellence in medicine and Puerto Rico, and they would have wanted our hospitals to have the best surgical care. Today, I believe our goals should be the same.

Through the Chapter and through the meeting we should continue to push for better patient care, better surgery and better medicine in Puerto Rico.

My best wishes to incoming President Dr Edwin Torres, and Dr Ricard Sanchez who will serve as program chairman for the next year. For my part, I will continue to work for the chapter and for the advancement of surgery in Puerto Rico .

Sincerely,

Ramón K Sotomayor, MD, FACS
